Reading Review - Sapphire Blue by Kerstin Gier

I reviewed Ruby Red the other day. That's the first book in the Precious Stone trilogy by Kerstin Gier, more commonly known as the Ruby Red trilogy. This is a great time traveling series. This review is for Ruby Red's sequel, Sapphire Blue. THERE ARE SPOILERS FOR RUBY RED AHEAD. I would suggest checking out my Ruby Red Review if you're curious about the series, although I'll tell you now that I really enjoyed Ruby Red. Now, let's talk about Sapphire Blue!

AGAIN SPOILERS AHEAD FOR RUBY RED

Gwen’s life has been a rollercoaster since she discovered she was the Ruby, the final member of the secret time-traveling Circle of Twelve. In between searching through history for the other time-travelers and asking for a bit of their blood (gross!), she’s been trying to figure out what all the mysteries and prophecies surrounding the Circle really mean.

At least Gwen has plenty of help. Her best friend Lesley follows every lead diligently on the Internet. James the ghost teaches Gwen how to fit in at an eighteenth century party. And Xemerius, the gargoyle demon who has been following Gwen since he caught her kissing Gideon in a church, offers advice on everything. Oh, yes. And of course there is Gideon, the Diamond. One minute he’s very warm indeed; the next he’s freezing cold. Gwen’s not sure what’s going on there, but she’s pretty much destined to find out.

I liked this sequel. I think that the characters developed a lot more in this book, and the plot has definitely gotten more intense. This was a great sequel to Ruby Red. It picks up right where the last book left off, and Gwen has quite a lot to contend with in this book. She seems to take her role in everything a bit more seriously as she learns more about things and has to decide what and who she should listen to. I really like that there are prologues and epilogues in each book that take you to Paul and Lucy, and what's going on with them. The prologue added a lot to the story, and the backstory of those two in particular.
Moving into the main story, there was a lot to like here. Gwen has gotten to be an even stronger character, and has a better grasp of what's going on. Both of these factors really help with the story. Also, the other characters developed a bit too. Gideon especially grew in this book. He and Gwen have some great moments, and I liked his character a lot more in this book. I liked learning more about him as well. One character I'll never like? Charlotte. She's still a brat. And she's in this book a bit more. *sighs* Oh well. The other characters were really interesting to read and the story developed nicely.
I did have a few problems, though. The main one was the character Xemerius. He was a really funny character, actually reminded me of Mushu from Mulan, but Xemerius has a really weird, half there but half not background. I have no idea what he was supposed to be, and so I just pretended he was Mushu in the book.
The plot was great- so much happened in so little time! The characters were all pretty good, even better than last book. This is a really solid sequel, and I think it's a great series so far!
