Characters I'd Want to Travel With - Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, with a new list or topic to discuss each week. This week was a freebie, which meant we picked our own topic. I chose 'Characters I'd Want to Travel With' because I love to travel and bringing some of my favorite characters along would be fantastic.

no. 1 - Cress, Thorne, Scarlet, Wolf, Cinder, and Kai from The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
Yes, it's a ton of characters. But I love all of these characters from the Lunar Chronicles books and so I think going to travel somewhere with them would be really fun.

no. 2 - Magnus Bane from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare
That would be the most fun, glitter filled, entertaining vacation. I've yet to read The Bane Chronicles by the way, so if you have let me know what you think.

no. 3 - Karou from Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
Karou is a really unique character that I would love to go walk around Prague with and chat with as we explored different cities.

no. 4 - Amy and Roger from Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson
These two have a story all about their travels, so I think it'd be fun to go on a journey with them.

no. 5 - Sophie and Howl from Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
I would love to travel around in a magical, moving castle with these two.

no. 6 - Lara Jean from To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han
I really enjoyed reading from Lara Jean's perspective in To All the Boys I've Loved Before, so I think she'd be a fun character to travel with.

no. 7 - Morpheus from Splintered by A.G. Howard
Morpheus is one of my favorite characters so I would love to explore the world with him.

no. 8 - Kiaran and Aileana from The Falconer by Elizabeth May
I really enjoyed reading this story and reading about these characters, and some of the steampunk elements would be fun to incorporate into travel.

no. 9 - Harry, Ron, and Hermione from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Yay Harry Potter!

no. 10 - Anna from Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Anna is a really great narrator and also the sort of person I think would be fun to travel with as well.

So, who would you like to go travel with? Let me know in the comments!

2015 Goals - Top Ten Tuesday

It's almost the end of another year, and this week's Top Ten Tuesday is all about New Year's Resolutions! Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and each week there's a new topic to discuss. Since we're talking about New Year's Resolutions for blogging, I wanted to look back at my Top Ten Tuesday of this from last year, and see how I ended up doing with those goals in addition to my goals for the new year.

So how did I do in 2014?
A lot of these resolutions had to do with 2014 Challenges I'd wanted to do, and so I wanted to briefly talk about these challenges and how I did this year. (10) I surpassed my Goodreads reading goal of 75 books. (9)For the Bookish 2014 TBR Pile Challenge, I had a goal of reading and reviewing 21-30 books published in 2013 or earlier. Even though I didn't end up reviewing as many books the latter half of the year, I still met this goal with 23 books published before 2014 that I read and reviewed on either the blog or on my Goodreads. (8) I participated in Bout of Books so I really enjoyed that readathon, and I signed up for the 2014 Book Blogger Summer Reading Program. I never really updated my progress much on the blog in terms of whether I met my goal of reading 12 books from the beginning of May to the beginning of September, but I can say now after checking my Goodreads I read 36 books and 1 novella during the designated time period.

(7) I had one of my goals as simply 'blog', and I think that was so important because I knew that I wanted to continue on with blogging, etc. I think that's definitely going to be a goal for the New Year as well because lately it has been super busy for me and I want to continue to try and post and get back to writing more reviews. (6) Currently, I'm going through my bookshelves and reorganizing and trying to minimize the TBR Pile, so maybe I can say I've somewhat contained the TBR craziness? (5) The aforementioned reorganization of the bookshelves was another goal I had in mind for 2014. (4) I ended up taking away the Book List tab since I found it wasn't the best way for me to organize everything.

 (3) I really enjoyed the books I read in 2014. I ended up adding 25 books to my Favorites shelf on Goodreads for books that I started and finished in 2014, and the book I was reading from the end of 2013 into the beginning of 2014 was a favorite as well. I posted about my favorite books in a past Top Ten Tuesday and also talked about some in my one post of Reading YA Rocks's A Week of Looking Forward and Looking Back. Earlier on in the year I did a series of posts all about the books I'd read and loved in the First Half of 2014. (2) Themed TBRs is something that I just couldn't keep to. I had been having problems with it even when I tried in late 2013, but this year showed me that I was too much of a mood reader to go with a set theme for every month, when what I wanted to read changed based on the book I'd just read, how I felt, etc.

(1) I definitely did this goal of starting 5 new series and finishing 5 old. The series I started are from 2014 debuts, older series I wanted to start, etc. but some of my favorites that I've started include The Falconer by Elizabeth MayRebel Belle by Rachel HawkinsArticle 5 by Kristen Simmons, and Stolen Songbird by Danielle L. Jensen.

What do I want to accomplish this year?
I'm planning on having a post up later this week with more specific goals of 2015, as well as another look at how I did in some of the 2014 challenges, but suffice it to say that I have a few goals in mind for 2015 in terms of reading plans and participating in some challenges run by several blogs, as well as the Goodreads reading challenge.

no. 1 - Meet my Goodreads reading goal
I don't think I'm going to be raising my Goodreads goal from 75 books. Now, here's my reasoning. I think 75 books is going to be a much harder challenge for me to meet this year because I have a lot of events going on this year that I can see impacting my schedule and making it much more difficult for me to set aside time to read at certain times throughout the year. I can always raise my goal if I find I get more reading done than I'd anticipated.

no. 2 - Participate in (and complete!) several 2015 challenges
More on this later this week, but I want to have a few reading goals to meet throughout the year, and I think that there are different kinds of challenges to find and participate in.

no. 3 - Blog
Yes, the vague goal of blogging is back. But I want to continue to make this a goal for me because I want to find a nice routine to get into in terms of posting, and what kinds of posts to make, etc.

no. 4 - Features
I had a few posts and series I tried earlier in 2014, and I liked some and didn't like others. So, in 2015 I'd like to continue on with some of the ideas I found worked well for me in writing posts and get into the routine of having posts I enjoy writing for the blog and that will be (hopefully) interesting for readers.

no. 5 - Participate in some blogging events
One of my favorite things from last year was the Book Blogger Love-A-Thon hosted by Alexa of  Alexa Loves Books and Katelyn of Tales of Books and Bands. So, this year I'd like to participate in some blogging events like that.

no. 6 - Read more 2015 debuts
I didn't end up reading as many 2014 debuts as I wanted to at the start of the year. So, hopefully this year I will be catching up on some of those and reading more 2015 debuts.

no. 7 - Write more reviews
I ended up not writing as many reviews towards the end of the year because I wasn't able to read as many books. I'd like to review more novels in 2014.

no. 8 - Reorganize my bookshelf
I'm currently in the process of doing this, and I'd like to have an organized system for my books by the end of 2015.

no. 9 - TBR Pile management
Last year one of the goals was to contain the TBR Pile. Hopefully I will avoid buying a ton of books.

no. 10 - Continue to read
Sometimes when it's a super busy time and I feel like I have a million things to do, I don't set aside time to read and relax with a good book. I want to change that in 2015. I want to try and set aside a little bit of time to catch up with a book and end my day with reading.

So there are my 2015 Goals! Let me know what yours are down in the comments.

Books I Want to Reread - Top Ten Tuesday

Rereading books is something I've been enjoying more recently, so today's Top Ten Tuesday is especially appropriate! Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature by The Broke and the Bookish, with a new theme each week to pick 10 books for. I've always been a fan of taking books back off the shelf and rereading my favorite parts, and lately I've been starting to reread books in their entirety, so I thought I would give 5 books I pick up to reread parts of, and 5 I would reread the whole book of.

5 Books I Would Reread Parts Of -

City of Glass, City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare
These are two books but they're from the same series so... *shrugs* close enough. City of Glass and City of Lost Souls are my favorite books from the series. These two, to me, had a lot of character and story arc development.

Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi
This is a book where everything comes together into a huge finale. Rereading this brings back a lot of fond memories of the series, and I thought it would definitely be a nice addition to the list.

I love how unique this series is! This book explores the wonder of the Theatre Illuminata, and the writing style and world are incredible. I love the characters' wit and dry humor as well, and how the entire novel reads as this intricate tapestries of playmaking and storytelling.

Fire with Fire by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian
I was considering adding Ashes to Ashes onto this as well, but the last two books of this series are filled with plot twists and character development. I definitely reread parts of Fire with Fire often as I waited for Ashes to Ashes, and now I can reread parts of both!

This book is like a trip to Paris for me. I loved exploring the nooks and crannies of the city with Anna, and of course meeting her wonderful friends. I think this is the sort of story that swept me away with its writing, and I love reading back through parts of it from time to time.

5 Books I've Reread Completely or Want To Soon

To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han
This was a Jenny Han book I really loved. The narrator is awkward yet not in an overly exaggerated sense- she's funny and quirky, and I loved reading her perspective. Also, this whole adventure is really fun, and I think I've reread this book, if not in its entirety (which I probably have), then almost, and I probably will reread it again before the sequel comes out!

The plot definitely thickened in this sequel! I've reread most of Unhinged numerous times, and so I think by now I've definitely reread the book. I cannot wait for Ensnared!

Endless Knight by Kresley Cole
Another sequel where character development and story lines are expanded upon. Things are definitely more than they appear, and this is a sequel that I enjoyed even more than the first, and made me very excited for the next book in the series.

You may have seen in my recent book haul that I picked up a copy of this book. It's my favorite from the Gemma Doyle trilogy, and I think a reread will be in order soon!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling
This is actually a book I'm currently rereading along with my other current reads. This series is one that means a lot to quite a few people, and I'm excited to be going back through and rereading the books. I think I'll sporadically continue on rereading it and possibly go on to the rest of the Harry Potter series, or just reread my favorites.

So, there's my Top Ten Tuesday! Let me know your picks for this week.

Stacking the Shelves - The 'How Long Has It Been Since My Last Post' Edition

Apologies for my sporadic posting lately! I'm getting a few behind the scenes things in order for celebrating Paper Worlds and Swirls of Ink's One Year of Blogging Celebration! Anyways, in the meantime I wanted to include a mini book haul today!
Stacking the Shelves is a weekly feature hosted by Tynga's Reviews, and it's an opportunity to share some of the books you've picked up recently! My book buying has definitely been on the decline lately, but I did find some really wonderful books recently and thought I'd share them with you all!

The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey
This is the sequel to The 5th Wave, which I read last autumn and really enjoyed the book. It was thrilling, fast paced, and very unique and so I was super happy to pick up the sequel. You can read my review of The 5th Wave if you haven't yet picked up this series- I think it's a sci fi post apocalyptic with some thriller elements mixed in.

This is the final book in the Gemma Doyle trilogy, which I read several years ago. I definitely enjoyed the series, but The Sweet Far Thing was by far my favorite book in the series by far. It really moved me, especially by the conclusion. So, I was really happy to pick up a copy.

I don't think I've ever mentioned it before on the blog, but I do enjoy history, and the Tudor era of English history has always been especially interesting to me. It's a time of huge changes within the time, and I knew a lot about Henry VIII and his different wives. However, I'm really excited for this book set during the Tudor court of the time because it focuses on figures I know relatively little about, and having read a chapter of this months ago while browsing a book shop, I loved the writing style. Lately, I've been wanting a historical fiction read too, so I'm very excited for this!

There is my book haul! Let me know if you've read any of these and your thoughts on them, and if you picked up some books feel free to let me know about that as well!

Talon by Julie Kagawa - Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Breaking the Spine, and throughout September I've been highlighting new releases I'm excited about for October. Today is the grand finale of September's 'looking forward to October' take on Waiting on Wednesday. While I won't be doing these weekly, I enjoyed having this going on the blog for the month, and I hope you've found some new books to enjoy! I have to say that looking at the books I've highlighted and the one I'm sharing today, a lot of awesome authors are releasing new books and starting another series. Today we're talking about Talon by Julie Kagawa. Dragons. and Julie Kagawa. Look for this exciting new book October 28, 2014.

Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragon slayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they're positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.

Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon's newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey: and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember's bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him: and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.

My Fall TBR - Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted at The Broke and the Bookish where each week is a different theme. Today is the seasonal TBR, and to be completely honest this is my favorite type of TTT to make. Because fall is one of the seasons where a ton of awesome books are coming out that I want to read, let's talk about the September, October, and November books I can't wait to pick up and read.

Ashes to Ashes by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian

So, to wrap it up, that's 6 sequels that I'm wanting to read, 3 new series by authors I've read before, and 1 debut I'm curious about. If you've read any of these series or authors before, let me know, along with some debuts you're excited about that are releasing in the fall, and of course your own fall TBR!

Ticker by Lisa Mantchev - Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Breaking the Spine, and in celebration of all the awesome new releases coming out in October, I'm showing one each week this month with a Waiting on Wednesday post. Today, similar to the first WoW of the month, I'm talking about a new book from an author who's already written a series I love. Although I read the Theatre Illuminata trilogy before I started blogging, I loved how unique the writing and concept of the story is. Lisa Mantchev is releasing another book coming out in December, 2014.

A girl with a clockwork heart makes every second count.

When Penny Farthing nearly died, the brilliant surgeon Calvin Warwick managed to implant a brass “Ticker,” transforming her into “the first of the Augmented!” But soon it was discovered that Warwick kidnapped and killed dozens of people striving to perfect another Ticker for Penny.

The last day of Warwick’s trial, the Farthing factory is bombed, Warwick disappears, and Penny and her brother, Nic, receive a ransom demand for all of their Augmentation notes if they want to see their parents again. Who is trying to stop their work? Or to control it? Or is the motive more sinister?

Determined to solve the mystery and reunite their family, the Farthings recruit their closest friends: fiery baker Violet Nesselrode and gentleman-about-town Sebastian Stirling. Unexpectedly leading the charge is Marcus Kingsley, the young army general who has his own reasons for wanting to lift the veil between this world and the next. Wagers are placed, friends are lost, romance stages an ambush, and time is running out for the girl with the clockwork heart.

Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch - Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Breaking the Spine and it's an opprotunity to highlight upcoming books. Throughout the month of September, because October is going to be filled with new releases I'm excited about, I decided to post a Waiting on Wednesday every week this month to share some exciting upcoming novels. Today's book is a 2014 author debut, and so I thought it would be fun to share this exciting new high fantasy that comes out October 14, 2014.

A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

The Young Elites by Marie Lu - Waiting on Wednesday

Breaking the Spine hosts Waiting on Wednesday, a weekly feature showcasing an upcoming release we're excited about. I don't do Waiting on Wednesdays often, but I thought it would be fun to do these throughout September and highlight some releases that are coming out in October, since I have quite a few books I can't wait for releasing next month. This is the first installment, featuring a new series by an author who's an old favorite. Marie Lu, the author of the Legend trilogy, is starting another new series this coming October, called The Young Elites. This book comes out October 7, 2014.

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.
It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

Book Characters That Would Be Sitting at My Lunch Table - Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted at The Broke and the Bookish, and each week is a different theme. This week is sort of back to school themed, with characters that would be sitting at my lunch table. I picked some of my favorite characters, so here's my list! I kind of cheated and put multiple characters together if they were from the same series.

From the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer -
Cinder, Cress, Scarlet, Captain Thorne, Wolf, Kai

Morpheus from the Splintered series by A.G. Howard

Fred and George Weasley from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

Sam and Anna from the Incarnate trilogy by Jodi Meadows

Sturmhond and the Darkling from the Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo

Karou from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy by Laini Taylor

Yann Margoza from The Red Necklace by Sally Gardner

Amy and Roger from Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Lillia from the Burn for Burn series by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian

Athena, Hermes, Cassandra, and Aidan from the Goddess War series by Kendare Blake

So there is my list of way more than ten characters I'd sit with at lunch. Hey, we'll have a big table, right? Let me know if any of my picks joined you for lunch as well, and I'll see you next time.
